Walter Mills' Military Service
An excellent account of the actions of the 95th Pennsylvania Infantry can be found in G. Horton Galloway's An Historical Paper. Galloway was a member of the 95th Pennsylvania Infantry and recorded this first person account of the unit.
The text records the origins of the 95th Pennsylvania as Gosline's Pennsylvania Zouaves through their term in the war.
Mills was injured at The Battle of Gaines' Mill, Hanover County, VA, the third of the Seven Days Battle. This battle proved costly for the 95th as 169 men were killed or injured. Additionally, Colonel Gosline was mortally wounded.
After his recuperation, Mills rejoined the 95th. The regiment joined others and participated in the Chancellorsville and Wilderness Campaigns and the Battle of Gettysburg. Mills remained with the regiment until the end of the war.
